Pools & Parasites

Summer creates a perfect breeding ground for parasites, so ensure your best-friend is fully protected with parasite & heartworm control, vaccinations and de-worming.  Dogs enjoy interacting with other dogs and are often put in kennels during holidays, so ensure your pooch is protected from contracting anything harmful.  While enjoying the sunshine, keep your pool gate firmly shut so older pets don’t fall in, and keep an extra eye on the driveway in case your pet is snoozing in the sun or under the car.

Kitten Season

The warmer months also bring on unwanted-kitten season, so be sure to have your new cat sterilised before the warm weather brings them into season.  Local cat havens often put as many as 100 unwanted kittens to sleep during the summer months – so don’t let your feline friend add to this number!  It’s also important to ensure that your furry friend is microchipped, as not only is this mandatory by law, but it also allows for a safe passage home should they wander away or get lost.

Native Animals

Summer brings native fauna such as: stumpy tails, ringtail possums, and kangaroos out onto the roads, so please take extra care when driving and avoid unnecessary deaths.  Also, why not plant some native flora in your garden, and landscape with some rocks and logs to encourage conservation of biodiversity for native animals, birds, lizards, and frogs?  To further protect our native fauna please keep your cats indoors at night and put bells on their collars to prevent them from hunting wildlife.

Reptilian Regulations

Reptiles make exciting, unique pets, and the bond you develop with your scaly sidekick can be very special indeed. Before you purchase a reptile though, you’ll need to obtain a license. The process behind this can vary from state to state, but you can obtain information from us or a reptile breeder.

Top Summer Tips

Leave the air-conditioner running when you go out, or cover your dog in a wet towel and turn the fan on.  Another great idea is to leave ice blocks in their water bowl to keep it cooler for longer.  During summer, it’s important you keep the number of your closest after-hours clinic at hand.  If you live in a bushfire zone you’ll no doubt have a plan in place if a fire occurs, so make sure you include your pet’s preparation with cat cages, dog boxes, leads, collars and I.D. tags, don’t forget pet food and extra water too.
